The BWY Website – IST and CPD
If you haven’t looked at the BWY website http://www.bwy.org.uk
for a while I do recommend a visit. There is now a members’ section which
you can log in to using your BWY number and a password. From there, you
can now record your CPD online.
You can also book various distance learning courses (these are presently
only available to teachers). A fascinating array of topics are on offer.
These include: philosophy and relaxation from our own Di Kendall; teaching
asana and Ujjayi with Pam Horton; Pranayama and Vinyasa with Margaret
Woodley; Ayurveda with Felicity Leigh and Chakras with Tabitha Evans
Apart from benefiting anyone with a special interest in these topics, they
are especially useful for those people (with computer access) who find it
difficult to get out and about, or who would have to travel large
distances to a workshop or IST day. All courses count as 7.5 CPD points.
Winner of the BBC Power of Sport Award
Yorkshire Yoga has been awarded the 2009 BBC Power of
Sport Award, supported by Sport England. Sports Presenter Harry Gration
from BBC’s Look North programme visited the yoga centre to make the
presentation to the British Wheel of Yoga Approved Centre. Laura Bissell,
Yorkshire Yoga’s founder and chairman, collected the award.
British
Wheel of Yoga chairman Helen Smith travelled from Essex to Yorkshire for
the award presentation.
“As the National Governing Body, the British of
Wheel of Yoga is committed to widening participation across the nation.
Its support of Approved Centres is dependent upon the centre having a
policy of full inclusion. Today has been an exciting opportunity to see
Yorkshire Yoga’s impressive disability programme in
action.”
The BBC Power of Sport award recognises real projects that have made a
difference in the community and the Yorkshire Yoga programme is a leading
example of this. The BBC filmed Yorkshire Yoga’s Able & Enabled class for
wheelchair users and carers.
In the last year, participation amongst people with
disabilities at Yorkshire Yoga has increased by 85%. Yorkshire Yoga’s
commitment is also to provide free or low cost classes for people who are
disadvantaged. Many programmes are free of charge to people who are
unemployed or working less than 17 hours a week such as the sessions for
Physical Disabilities, Learning Disabilities, Parents & Tots, Teens and
Young Adults, Carers and the charity’s popular Thinnerpeace project.
David Holdsworth, Controller BBC English Regions, added: "All our Power of
Sport award winners are making a real difference through sport to the
lives of people in their communities. Finding and telling these fantastic
stories back to our audiences across England are at the heart of what the
BBC is here to do, so we're delighted to be part of these awards."
Sport England is supporting the BBC Power of Sport Award. Jennie Price,
Sport England’s Chief Executive, said: “This award celebrates the power of
sport to improve lives and enrich local communities. The Yorkshire Yoga
programme proves just what can be achieved when you have great ideas
backed by dedicated people.”
Di Kendall Retires from Diploma Course Tuition
In April 2009, Di Kendall‘s last set of diploma course
students were passed out. After many years of hard work coaching some of our
region’s finest teachers, she is now looking forward to her hard earned
retirement.
Kamal Sahota who graduated this April said;
“Di has been a tremendous teacher. Her knowledge of anatomy and philosophy and
adherence to high standards and her steel like determination, to get the most
from her aspiring teachers, has made it a privilege to be taught by her. Her
dedication, professionalism and care towards her students have been outstanding,
despite the AOL fuelled IT challenges, students having five babies, students’
house moves to farflung Scotland etc. etc”
